Biography

My name is Melissa Nelson. I have my degree in biology/ Marine Biology and have been teaching for 13+ years. I love teaching and helping students figure out the answers and really learn the topic. I have a lot of experience outside of the classroom as well, from traveling to many different countries to study marine biology to studying underwater in various locations. Science is my passion and I am here to help!

A cladogram is a branching diagram that represents the
evolutionary relationships of a group of organisms.
True
False
How does nitrogen move from the atmosphere into living
organisms?
It doesn't. There is no atmospheric form of nitrogen.
Bacteria fix it (capture it from the air) and release
it as ammonia or other compounds that are available to plants.
Plants bring it in during photosynthesis.
Algae and other aquatic photosynthesizers bring nitrogen gas
into their cells from the water.
You are on a canoe trip in a lake in Northern Minnesota. In this
ecosystem walleye pike (a fish) eat minnows. The minnows
eat zooplankton, and the zooplankton eat algae. Walleye
pike are which of the following?
secondary consumers
tertiary consumers
primary consumers
producers
An organism's _________________ is its position in the food
chain.
habitat
niche
keystone level
trophic level
successional level

Symbiotic interactions can be classified according to outcomes
for partners. Name, and define, the three broad classifications of
symbiosis, support your answer with examples of organisms in the
partnership, and identify how each are impacted by the
interaction

A. The side chains of amino acids that are in the interior part
of a membrane are known as
1. basic.
2. acidic.
3. polar
4. hydrophilic
5 hydrophobic.
Which statement is True?
1. Membranes of living organisms are in a fluid state.
2. In plants, the plasma membrane is known as the cell wall.
3. Rough endoplasmic reticulum is the name given to clusters of
ribosomes attached to the cytoskeleton.
4. Membranes are semipermeable: large molecules such as proteins
can easily move across them.
5. Hydrophilic organic molecules easily diffuse across membranes
in eukaryotic cells.

A hen and a rooster produce 15 red offspring and 49
black offspring. What are the phenotypes and the genotypes of the
parents? (HINT: Think about what ratio 49 black to 15 red is
closest to in order to determine the parental genotypes.) If this
data is correct, why doesn’t it have to be 15 red offspring and 45
black offspring?
If one of the red daughter hens were mated with her
father (it's okay with chickens), what phenotypes would you expect
to find among the progeny (offspring)?

In man, dimples (D) is dominant over the gene for no
dimples (d). A man who has dimples, but whose mother
had no dimples is married to a woman who is heterozygous for
dimples. What are the genotypes for the man and women?
What are the different genotypes of the offspring from
the above cross?

1.The allele for long fingers (F) is dominant to short (f)
fingers. If a couple both with long fingers has an offspring with
short fingers, what must be true?
Select one:
there is not enough information to determine this
one parent is homozygous and one parent is heterozygous for the
trait
both parents are heterozygous for the trait
this couple could not have a child with this phenotype
both parents are homozygous for the trait
2. A cell with 8 chromosomes, that is 4 pairs of homologous, has
how many chromatids after Meiosis I?
Select one:
32
4
12
16
8
