Biography

Hi! My name is Mitch, and I am a recently graduated student with a passion for both physics and math. I graduated from the University of Washington Bothell with a bachelors of science in physics and a minor in mathematics. I then continued into completing a Master of Science in Physics with a specialty in particle physics from Louisiana State University. I want to make sure that students love these subjects as much as I do, which is why I joined Numerade!

The definition of resistivity (ρ = E/J) implies that an electric field exists inside a conductor, like a wire or a resistor. Yet it is stated that there can be no electrostatic electric field inside a conductor. Please explain and resolve this apparent contradiction. Is a current-carrying wire an electrostatic situation? If it isn't, does the "rule" apply?

A certain sub-atomic particle is so short-lived that its
lifetime cannot be measured directly. The uncertainty in its rest
mass, however, can be measured to be 10 eV. What is its
lifetime?

1.An electron, rest mass m e, has been accelerated to such a
speed that its relativistic mass is 2.1 m e. Expressed as a
fraction of the speed of light (eg "0.5"), at what speed is the
electron traveling?
2.The nucleus of an atom has a rest mass 2.54 *
10 -26 kg. Expressed in units of nanojoules
(10 -9 joules), calculate the rest energy of
this nucleus.

What is the value of each of the angles of a triangle whose
sides are 154, 193, and 91 cm in length?
(Hint: Consider using the law of cosines given in Appendix
E.)

Two charges are positioned as shown in the diagram. q1 = +1.00 nC is at x = 0 m, y = 1 m, and q2 = -2.00 nC is at x = 2 m, y = 0.
What is the magnitude and direction of the electric field A at the origin (0,0)?
What is the electric potential B at the origin (0,0)?
If a third charge = +3.00 nC is placed at (0,0), what is the magnitude and direction of the electric force on the third charge due to q1 and q2?
What is the electric potential energy of the third charge, q3, at (0,0)?
