Biography

Hello everyone. My name is Patricia Claus (like Christmas) and I teach sciences like Biology and Chemistry. I majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry and Spanish. Science is one of my favorite topics to learn and teach, so I am thrilled to be here and discuss any and all topics, as well as help solve homework problems.

Life: The Science of Biology

Gram-negative bacteria
$a$ appear blue to purple following Gram staining.
$b$. are the most abundant of the bacterial groups.
$c .$ are all either bacilli or cocci.
$d$. contain no peptidoglycan in their cell walls.
$e$ are all photosynthetic.

Many proteins other than histones are found associated with chromosomes. What roles do these nonhistone proteins play? Why do chromosomes have more different types of nonhistone than histone proteins?

Suppose a young woman is exposed to a chemical mutagen and some permanent changes arise in the DNA (mutations) of some of her germ line cells. Will those mutations be passed down to her children? Why or why not?

Group of answer choices:
No; mutations in germ line cells cannot be inherited.
Yes; germ line cells produce gametes and these changes must be passed on to offspring.
Maybe; if one of the mutated germ line cells produces a gamete AND that gamete is involved in forming a zygote.

Which of the following can be seen from the karyotype below?
Mark all that apply.

Group of answer choices:
This individual has Klinefelter's syndrome.
This individual is male.
This individual is female.
This individual has Down Syndrome.
None of these can be determined from a karyotype.

Sickle-cell anemia is a recessive disorder which can be lethal. However, the allele for sickle-cell has been maintained in the human population by natural selection. What do biologists believe is the explanation for this?

Group of answer choices:
The recessive allele can be masked or hidden and thus can stay in the population indefinitely.
In its heterozygous form, the allele will confer resistance to malaria (heterozygote advantage).
This is because this mutation keeps arising spontaneously in the human population.
Modern medical treatments have allowed the allele to persist in the human population.

A. A poly(A) tail
B. A 5’ cap
C. Untranslated regions (UTRs)
D. Introns
E. Exons
Which of the following statements about protein synthesis is
true?
A. The N terminus of the growing protein chain is attached
to the 5’ end of a tRNA
B. The C terminus of the growing protein chain is attached
to the 3’ end of a tRNA
C. The N terminus of the growing protein chain is attached
to the 3’ end of a tRNA
D. The C terminus of the growing protein chain is attached
to the 5’ end of a tRNA
E. tRNAs are never attached to the growing protein
chain

Consider two populations of mice, A and B. In one
population (population A) the major predator is a small lizard that
feeds primarily on pinkies (baby mice) and small juvenile mice.
Once these young mice become large enough they are no longer at
risk of being eaten as they are bigger than the gape size of the
lizard. So in this population, the pinkies and juvenile mice
have the lowest expected per capita survival rates (compared with
adults). In another population, owls are the most common
predator, and mice are equally at risk no matter their
size. Based on this information alone how do you expect the
life histories to evolve in these two populations? Judge the
following statement for whether it is true or false: Population A
should evolve to reach sexual maturity at an earlier age than
Population B.

Based on your research study, refer to your research questions.
Formulate three (3) null hypotheses and three (3) alternative hypotheses. Write your research title and research questions, followed by your hypotheses. Use the space provided for your answer.

Research Title: THE FEASIBILITY OF RICE BRAN AS AN ORGANIC PELLET FOOD FOR HAMSTERS (CRICETINAE)

Research Questions:
1. Is it feasible for rice bran to release nutrients after mixing with corn starch and being eaten by the hamster?
2. Are there any changes in the appearance of hamsters using the Organic Rice Bran Pellet Food compared to their normal feeds in terms of:
2.1. Color of fur?
2.2. Fur texture?
2.3. Height?
2.4. Weight?
2.5. BMI?
3. Will there be changes in the condition of hamsters after using Organic Rice Bran Pellet Rat Food?
4. Is Rice Bran Pellet Food effective in the growth and development of hamsters?
5. Is Rice Bran Pellet Rat Food effective as a substitute for inorganic and expensive rat foods?

Null hypotheses:
1. There is no significant difference in the release of nutrients when rice bran is mixed with corn starch and eaten by hamsters.
2. There are no significant changes in the appearance of hamsters using Organic Rice Bran Pellet Food compared to their normal feeds in terms of color of fur, fur texture, height, weight, and BMI.
3. There are no changes in the condition of hamsters after using Organic Rice Bran Pellet Rat Food.

Alternative hypotheses:
1. There is a significant difference in the release of nutrients when rice bran is mixed with corn starch and eaten by hamsters.
2. There are significant changes in the appearance of hamsters using Organic Rice Bran Pellet Food compared to their normal feeds in terms of color of fur, fur texture, height, weight, and BMI.
3. There are changes in the condition of hamsters after using Organic Rice Bran Pellet Rat Food.

The presence of wings is the defining feature of the Pterygota, and there is no doubt that wings have been critical to the evolutionary and ecological success of insects. However, many species of pterygotes have secondarily lost functional wings (multiple times in the Phasmatodea, for example), and other species exhibit a variety of polymorphisms in wing development (migratory locust, for example). In some species, both males and females are wingless, while in others, females are wingless and males have functional wings. In still other species, some males have functional wings while others are wingless. Under what circumstances would you expect to find the absence of wings to be advantageous for a species, or for one sex or the other, in insects? See if you can find some specific examples.

Radioactively labeled molecules are used today in medicine and
science. The labeled molecules emit radioactive decay
products that allow scientists to track its pathway through an
organism. Radioactivity has provided science and medicine
with information that has resulted in a better
understanding of human physiology. Discuss the
risks and benefits regarding the use of radioactive tracers in the
diagnosis of treatment of disease and uses in scientific
research. Cite specific examples, outcomes, and case
studies that are being conducted today. This discussion must
be a minimum of 450 words.
