The influence from any neutral molecule or atom is negligible at large enough distances because of the overall charge neutrality; however, for atomic level distances one often needs a tool to predict the influence when the center of negative charge does not coincide with the center of positive charge: the electric dipole is one such useful model. For the electric dipole arrangement shown below, explain the reasoning for the steps that allow you to prove that the magnitude of the electric potential at distances along the axis of the dipole such that x>>a can be written as V ≅ (2k_e qa) / x², explaining that the potential for an electric dipole drops off as the square of the distance.

The patterns are each produced by about 500 individual photons striking the plate with a probability density proportional to the intensity of the diffracted wave.
