Net Filtration Pressure

Net filtration pressure is the resultant force governing the movement of fluid across the capillary wall, calculated by the difference between the forces favoring filtration (such as capillary hydrostatic pressure) and those opposing it (such as oncotic pressure). With dangerously low blood pressure, the capillary hydrostatic pressure falls, reducing the overall net filtration pressure despite normal oncotic pressure, thereby diminishing the driving force for fluid exit from the capillaries.

Oncotic Pressure

Oncotic pressure, often referred to as colloid osmotic pressure, is the force exerted by proteins in the blood plasma that tends to pull water into the circulatory system. In this context, normal oncotic pressure indicates that the proteins in the blood are maintained at levels sufficient to generate an osmotic pull for fluid retention in the vascular space.

Capillary Hydrostatic Pressure

This is the blood pressure within the capillaries that pushes fluid out of the capillaries into the interstitial space. It is largely determined by the systemic blood pressure and plays a critical role in driving filtration across the capillary walls. A drop in systemic blood pressure directly reduces capillary hydrostatic pressure, thereby lowering the force that promotes fluid movement out of the capillaries.
