Mr Toria goes through solving problem 111 from chapter one section to practice. Now in the tax, you're given a picture of this tree trunk that a cross section of this tree trunk that the danger has cut down S so you'll have to forgive my my attempted redrawing this There's a reason that I am not on art teacher and do math instead. But it has both of the outer rings measurements and one of the outer rings as 5 30 seconds on 11 16. So part ay asks us to figure out the group growth means ad. So here what we're going to do is we're going Thio ad these two fractions. So we have five 30 seconds plus one 16 now they are not common denominators. So what we have to do is figure out what a promise denominators want to be. While I know that 16 times two is 32 so I am going to use that form of one to over two to create my equivalent fraction. One times two is two 16 times two is 32. If you don't know that, then you can always prime factor and get you D'oh! And then time 16. But then you would figure that out. But it's 10. 16. So, uh, then I can rewrite this as 5/32 plus two over. Very too. So then we get high. Plus two is seven over the common denominator of 32. So the total girl of those two is 7 30 seconds of inch be asks us to hide the difference of those two rings, and the difference means to subtract. So what we're going to do is subtract those two corrections and then I sing is we already have the, uh, common denominator. And so I'm just gonna rewrite that, Uh, 5 30 seconds minus two, 30 seconds and five minus two is three over that common denominator. So the difference in the rings is 3 30 seconds of a niche, and those air simplified. So we're all set with R sum and difference
