Resonance

Resonance is the phenomenon where a system responds with maximum amplitude when it is driven by an external force at one of its natural frequencies. In vibrating strings, resonance occurs when the frequency of the applied force, such as from a tuning fork, matches one of the natural frequencies of the string's vibrational modes.

Standing Waves on a String

Standing waves form on a string when waves traveling in opposite directions interfere, creating fixed nodes and antinodes. The pattern of these nodes divides the string into segments that vibrate in sync with each other, and each vibrational mode (or harmonic) corresponds to a different number of these segments.

Effect of String Length on Frequency

For a string under constant tension and with uniform mass per unit length, the frequency of vibration is inversely proportional to the length of the vibrating portion of the string. Doubling the length lowers the fundamental frequency by half, which means that to achieve the same frequency as before, the string must vibrate in a higher harmonic mode with more segments of standing wave.
