Hey, what's up? my name is nicol, and today we're going to answer the question, when we eat food, where do the nutrients enter our body? in order to unravel this question, let's just take a second and envision ourselves on a nice hot summer day having this beautiful glass of lemonade made from fresh squeezed lemons that were very juicy and sour.
00:24
We're going to add some sugar into that nice drink there and a bunch of ice cubes to make it ice cold.
00:30
Now, as i'm describing this glass of lemonade, you might have actually started to salivate because when we think about food, our body immediately reacts.
00:40
When we put food in our body, our body begins to digest it immediately.
00:45
So let's look at the first seven steps of digestion.
00:48
There's eight total.
00:49
But let's go through the first seven to figure out where those nutrients are going to actually enter our body from the food that we put into our body.
00:55
So the very first thing that happens is that saliva is released in anticipation of eating.
01:03
So you might have actually started salivate as i was describing that lemonade.
01:06
The second thing that happens is that we then chew our food with our teeth and we create a nice wet lump that we then swallow that goes down our esophagus.
01:17
That is called a bolus.
01:18
A bolus is just that wet chewed up food that we have.
01:21
So the food that we eat is typically made out of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
01:26
And those are like large molecules that can't get into our body.
01:29
So we got to break them down into their smallest pieces.
01:31
In order to do that, we chew it.
01:33
It goes down our esophagus into the stomach.
01:38
Now, the stomach has muscular walls.
01:42
And so it basically continues to churn it into an even smaller, more refined paste.
01:52
And that new paste is called chime.
01:56
So it's when the bolus gets broken down into smaller bits.
02:00
We now have this stuff that we call chyme.
02:02
As the chyme is being produced, hormones are released.
02:06
And those hormones trigger the release of enzymes, and these enzymes are going to help break down proteins.
02:15
So if you ate some meat or some nuts, then those hormones are going to trigger the release of enzymes and acids to break down the proteins.
02:23
And then it's also going to trigger the pancreas, the gallbladder, and the liver, who are like the auxiliary organs here in the digestive system to release digestive juices, which are known as bile, to begin digesting the fats that we eat.
02:36
All right.
02:37
In step six, we then have the small intestine.
02:41
So the food was in the stomach...
