So let's start off by defining what a defense mechanism is.

And there are actually tons and tons of different defense mechanisms that were postulated and put forth by sigmund freud.

And essentially what defense mechanisms do, they're essentially psychological strategies that we kind of, of all employ that are used to protect ourselves from experiencing anxiety, from certain thoughts or feelings that we might be having at a specific point in time.
