Neural Adaptation

Neural adaptation refers to the process where photoreceptors or neural cells reduce their response to a constant stimulus over time. In the context of color vision, prolonged exposure to one color can lead to a reduced response in the neural channels sensitive to that color. When the stimulus is removed or replaced with a neutral one, the imbalance in neural responses can cause the complementary color to be perceived.

Afterimage Effect

The afterimage effect is closely related to both the opponent-process theory and neural adaptation. After looking at a saturated color for an extended period, when a neutral stimulus is viewed, the fatigued color channel does not respond as strongly, leading to the perception of its opponent (complementary) color. In this case, if a viewer’s yellow-sensitive cells become fatigued after prolonged exposure to yellow, a white object (which normally stimulates all color channels equally) might be perceived as blue.

Opponent-Process Theory

This theory explains that color perception is the result of two opponent systems working in tandem, such as red versus green and blue versus yellow. The idea is that these pairs work in opposition; when one color in the pair is strongly stimulated, the other becomes inhibited. This mechanism helps explain various color perception phenomena, including the perception of afterimages and complementary colors.
