Glycogenolysis

Glycogenolysis is the breakdown of glycogen to glucose-1-phosphate. This process bypasses the first step of glycolysis that requires ATP to phosphorylate free glucose into glucose-6-phosphate. Consequently, when glycogen is the source, the ATP that would have been used for phosphorylation is conserved, resulting in a higher net ATP yield.

ATP Investment in Glycolysis

In glycolysis, free glucose must be phosphorylated to glucose-6-phosphate by an initial ATP-dependent step. This ATP investment is necessary to trap glucose within the cell and prepare it for further metabolism. However, when glucose-6-phosphate is derived from glycogen, this initial investment step is avoided, leading to an overall increase in net ATP production during complete oxidation.
