Angiogenesis

Angiogenesis is the process by which new blood vessels form from pre-existing ones. This process is essential not only in normal physiological events like wound healing and tissue growth but also in pathological conditions. In the context of diseases, particularly cancer, angiogenesis allows for the supply of oxygen and nutrients to growing tissues, thereby supporting their development and sustainability.

Tumor Angiogenesis

In cancer biology, tumor angiogenesis refers to the mechanism by which tumors promote the formation of new blood vessels to secure the blood supply needed for rapid growth and survival. Tumors release various signaling molecules, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), to stimulate this process, which is crucial for tumor expansion beyond a minimal size.

Metastasis

Metastasis is the process by which cancer cells spread from the original (primary) tumor to establish new tumors in distant organs. Although angiogenesis is primarily responsible for forming a vascular network that nourishes tumor cells, it also indirectly facilitates metastasis by providing the channels through which cancer cells can enter the bloodstream and migrate to other parts of the body.
