Hi, in this video we're going to discuss habitat fragmentation and what happens as the patches of habitat become smaller.

So we have a drawing here to represent a specific type of habitat.

It's green and red.

And the only reason it's green and red is just to show that there is a consistent type of resources in this habitat that is favorable for the species that live there.

Outside the habitat, i've got blue just to show that there are different kinds of resources outside of it.

So that's a different kind of habitat.

Different kinds of species can live there.

So we want to discuss what happens as this habitat is destroyed, and so the actual amount of habitat becomes smaller.

So if we take and we start to erase some of the habitat that we have here, what happens is the actual amount of the habitat itself is less, but notice that as we create a fragment, then we have made a new edge.

Well, in this case, actually, two new edges.

So as the habitat gets smaller, the amount of edge of the habitat becomes greater.

We might have more fragmentation going on, and so we're creating, we're making less habitat, and yet again, we're making more edges.

Okay, so a couple of things happen as the habitat becomes more greatly fragmented.

The first thing, so the original habitat was large and it was able to sustain.

A large population of the species that live there.

The habitat is no longer large as it becomes more fragmented.

So small patches cannot hold a large population of the species if that species needs a larger habitat.

So that makes sense.

For the first problem with fragmentation as the patches get smaller, the species that need large areas are not able to live in these smaller patches.

The second thing that happens is that as the patches get smaller, the populations that live in these patches are necessarily forced to become small populations...
