As stated in the text, convincing examples that demonstrate the law of conservation of matter outside of the laboratory are few and far between. Indicate whether the mass would increase, decrease, or stay the same for the following scenarios where chemical reactions take place:(a) Exactly one pound of bread dough is placed in a baking tin. The dough is cooked in an oven at $350^\circ F$ releasing a wonderful aroma of freshly baked bread during the cooking process. Is the mass of the baked loaf less than, greater than, or the same as the one pound of original dough? Explain.(b) When magnesium burns in air a white flaky ash of magnesium oxide is produced. Is the mass of magnesium oxide less than, greater than, or the same as the original piece of magnesium? Explain.(c) Antoine Lavoisier, the French scientist credited with first stating the law of conservation of matter, heated a mixture of tin and air in a sealed flask to produce tin oxide. Did the mass of the sealed flask and contents decrease, increase, or remain the same after the heating?
a) less b) greater c) same

Mhm. Okay. So for part when the bread is baking um the Roma that it's really saying that in order for to rise the yeast must ferment and you're giving off carbon dioxide. Um So the mass of the bread itself that you like way once it's once it's finished, it's going to be less than the one that you started with. Because you're not also including in your measurements, the CO two that's given off. So it's not that mass is disappearing, it's simply leaving the system as a gas. For part B. We have an opposite occurrence. So magnesium is reacting with oxygen to form magnesium oxide. And so the magnesium oxide has picked up oxygen. And compared to the piece of magnesium, it's going to weigh more. But again, it wasn't that mass was spontaneously created. It was just that we've added oxygen to the system. And for parts, see if you have 10 and air reacting and you form tin oxide, probably S. N. 02, but if you from 10 4, but you don't know which one, but it's not important. The entire system here is the 10 and the air and the air contains oxygen in it. So what all of the things that you start with are going to be the same as what you end with the tin will react with the oxygen and then you'll have the rest of the components of the air. Um So you're going to get the same mass before and after
