So where do emerging viruses come from? the first thing we need to think about is what an emergent virus is.
00:10
So an emerging virus is what is originally a fairly nondescript virus in a given population, either not really infecting a lot of the population or not infecting the population at all, to very, very rapidly infecting a lot of the population.
00:30
A large proportion of the population.
00:33
And this can come from many different sources.
00:40
The primary, one of the primary sources would be mutations.
00:46
So viral genomes don't really have the, and viral replication doesn't really have the proofreading that occurs in a lot of living things.
00:56
And so mutations can frequently occur, and these mutations can frequently occur, greatly change how a virus infects its living organisms.
01:07
So for instance, a virus might create a protein coat around itself that shields it from any potential defense systems and its host organisms.
01:24
What can also happen is that the mutation can rapidly spread from species to species.
01:40
So when it goes from one species to a new species, that new species isn't going to have the defense systems in place to handle that new virus.
01:53
And this might be a new introduction from one species to the next species, or it can simply be that a mutation and two cohabiting species allows it to transfer from one species to the next...
