Chicxulub impact. About 66 million years ago, an asteroid crashed into Earth near the present-day town of Chicxulub in Mexico (Yukatán Peninsula.) The impact produced a crater of about $180 \mathrm{~km}$ in diameter and its effects are believed to have caused a massive extinction of plant and animal groups, including dinosaurs. According to recent simulations (2019), the asteroid had a mass of about $2.4 \times 10^{15} \mathrm{~kg}$ and a velocity of about $20 \mathrm{~km} / \mathrm{s}$. (a) How much kinetic energy did this meteor deliver to the ground? (b) How does this energy compare to the energy released by a 1.0 megaton nuclear bomb? (A megaton bomb releases the same amount of energy as a million tonnes or $10^{9} \mathrm{~kg}$ of TNT, $4.184 \times 10^{15} \mathrm{~J}$ of energy.)
