Question
Chlorofluorocarbons were formerly used as refrigerants in soft-drink vending machines and ice-cream display cases. Why has their use been curtailed and, in most cases, eliminated?
Step 1
CFCs are stable, non-toxic compounds that were widely used as refrigerants due to their effectiveness in cooling systems. Show more…

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are nontoxic, nonflammable chemicals containing atoms of carbon, chlorine, and fluorine. They are used in the manufacture of aerosol sprays, blowing agents for foams and packing materials, as solvents, and as refrigerants. 1. When released into the atmosphere, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) react with UV light, producing atomic chlorine. Atomic chlorine goes on to act as a catalyst in the destruction of ozone. Using any resources available to you, determine how much CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) would need to be released into the atmosphere to completely destroy the ozone layer. 2. CFCs were subsequently banned and alternative chemicals were found as substitutes. What were the social and economic impacts of switching away from CFCs?
