Protein Secondary Structure

Proteins are composed of local structural elements known as secondary structures. The two most common types are alpha helices and beta sheets. How these elements arrange in the overall protein architecture is essential for understanding structure–function relationships in proteins.

Protein Tertiary Structure Classification

Proteins are often classified based on the predominant types of secondary structure elements they contain. The classifications include alpha proteins (dominated by alpha helices), beta proteins (dominated by beta sheets), and alpha/beta proteins (which are composed of both alpha helices and beta sheets intermingled in their tertiary structure).

Alpha-Helical Proteins and Transmembrane Structures

Alpha-helical proteins possess a high proportion of alpha helices and are frequently found in transmembrane channels and receptors. Their helical regions allow them to span lipid bilayers, forming channels or pore structures.

Alpha/Beta Protein Folds

Alpha/beta proteins integrate both alpha helices and beta sheets into their structure. A common motif in these proteins is a central beta-sheet flanked by alpha helices, which is characteristic of many enzyme folds, such as the thioredoxin fold.
