Plant Cell Wall

The plant cell wall is a rigid, multilayered structure surrounding the plant cell membrane. It provides mechanical protection, maintains cell shape, and limits the direction of cell growth. The wall is primarily made up of fibrous carbohydrates like cellulose, along with nonfibrous components such as hemicelluloses, pectins, and sometimes lignin, which collectively contribute to its strength and rigidity.

Fibrous Components

By contrast, animal cells rely on a more dynamic and less rigid ECM, allowing for greater flexibility and movement within tissues.

Cell Connectivity

Cell connectivity pertains to how cells adhere to one another and communicate within a tissue. In animal tissues, the ECM is pivotal in mediating cell–cell interactions through adhesion proteins and signaling molecules, facilitating coordinated tissue function. In plants, while the rigid cell wall limits cell movement, specialized structures such as plasmodesmata enable intercellular communication, with the cell wall itself helping to maintain discrete and organized cell assemblages.
