Since scientists have been able to detect, count, and map genes, there's been some surprises when we compare genome size, the number of protein encoding genes, and we compare the organisms that we're looking at to each other.

So, for example, if we look down here, humans, homo sapien, have something like 20 to 25 ,000 different protein encoding genes.

We compare that to a parasite up here, trichomonas, vaginalis, they have almost three times more protein -coding genes than we do, and yet we are definitely a more complex organism.

Another example would be there's a lungfish that has 40 times more dna than humans.
