Metallic Character

Metallic character describes the tendency of an element to lose electrons and form positive ions, displaying properties such as luster, malleability, and high electrical and thermal conductivity. Generally, elements with high metallic character are good conductors and are typically found on the left side of the periodic table. This concept underpins many of the chemical reactions and physical properties observed among different elements.

Trend Down a Group

As one moves down a group in the periodic table, the metallic character of elements generally increases. This is due to the increasing atomic size and the greater shielding effect provided by the inner electron shells, which makes it easier for the outer electrons to be removed. Consequently, elements lower in a group exhibit more metallic properties compared to those at the top.

Trend Across a Period

Moving from left to right across a period in the periodic table, the metallic character decreases. This occurs because elements gain more protons and electrons, leading to a higher effective nuclear charge which holds the electrons more tightly, making them less likely to lose electrons. As a result, elements become less metallic and more nonmetallic in character from left to right.
