What are the benefits of using the use dilution or inuse tests compared to the disc diffusion assay? so these are all ways of testing the efficacy of a disinfectant.
00:11
So the disc diffusion, this is where you get whatever disinfectant you're using, and you put the discs of it on a plate of growth medium, seed it with bacteria, and see if there is a zone of inhibition, whether disinfectant has inhibited, bacterial growth.
00:32
So this is a very controlled environment and it's very easy to compare disinfectants.
00:41
And you can use it on a specific bacterium.
00:43
So those are benefits of that.
00:45
So why would we want to use something else? well, use dilution and in use, so use dilution is testing on the surface and in use is testing disinfectants that has been in the field, so actually used medically.
01:06
And in both cases, we check to see if there is any bacteria.
01:12
So use dilution, you check for bacteria on the medium, looking for the cloudiness of it to show growth.
01:23
In use, you plate droplets of the disinfectants for the disinfectants.
01:27
Used disinfectants and see if anything grows...
