And the lagging strand is the strand that exhibits this continuous dna synthesis due to the 3 prime 2 .5 prime direction and the direction that the replication fork is moving in to open.

So obviously on the other strand, which is the leading strand, dna can easily just continuously replicate and lay down new nucleotides as the replication force moves further and further down.

On the lagging strand, however, in due to the fact that nucleotides must be laid in the 3 prime to 5 prime direction, they need that 3 prime end, you're going to have segments of dna.
