Then the impurities that were formed in the above reaction are removed via filtration. Aluminum hydroxide is then recovered by the addition of acid to aluminum.$$2 \mathrm{Na}\left[\mathrm{Al}(\mathrm{OH})_{4}\right](s)+\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{SO}_{4}(a q) \longrightarrow 2 \mathrm{Al}(\mathrm{OH})_{3}(s)+\mathrm{Na}_{2} \mathrm{SO}_{4}(a q)+2 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}(l)$$iii. The precipitated aluminum hydroxide is then removed by the process of filtration. Aluminumoxide, $\mathrm{Al}_{2} \mathrm{O}_{3}$ is produced by the heating of the hydroxide.$2 \mathrm{Al}(\mathrm{OH})_{3}(s) \longrightarrow \mathrm{Al}_{2} \mathrm{O}_{3}(s)+3 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}(g)$iv. Aluminum oxide, $\mathrm{Al}_{2} \mathrm{O}_{3}$ is then dissolved in a molten mixture of calcium fluoride, $\mathrm{CaF}_{2}$ andcryolite, $\mathrm{Na}_{3} \mathrm{AlF}_{6}$ . This solution is then electrolyzed.$\mathrm{Al}^{3+}+3 \mathrm{e}^{-} \longrightarrow \mathrm{Al}(s)$
