Wurtz Reaction

The Wurtz reaction is a classical method for the synthesis of carbon–carbon bonds through the coupling of alkyl halides in the presence of sodium metal. In this reaction, two molecules of alkyl halides react under dry, aprotic conditions (typically with dry ether as solvent) to form a new carbon–carbon bond while sodium halide is produced as a byproduct. This method can be used to couple a cyclohexyl bromide with an ethyl bromide to form ethylcyclohexane, although care must be taken due to issues with selectivity and competing side reactions.

Grignard Reaction and Organometallic Coupling

The Grignard reaction involves the formation of a Grignard reagent by reacting an alkyl bromide with magnesium in anhydrous conditions. Once the cyclohexyl magnesium bromide is formed, it can be used in subsequent organometallic coupling reactions to attach an ethyl group, either through reaction with an ethyl electrophile or by further transformation into a suitable organometallic intermediate such as an organocuprate. This method allows for controlled carbon–carbon bond formation in the synthesis of complex molecules like ethylcyclohexane.
