Today we're going to be talking about chapter 14, question two, which asks us to consider the difference between suspensions and colloids.

So the main difference between suspensions and colloids is whether or not they can be separated into their constituent parts by something mechanical or physical like filtration.

Can they be separated by filtration? for example, if we have, let's say, a mixture of dirt and water, so muddy water, make the water blue, and we'll just put some particles of mud, there's some sticks, here's a leaf, you know, and there's just a lot of stuff in this water.

But after we filter it, and we'll draw a little funnel, after we filter it, we can have nice clean water again, or hopefully clean.

However, with a colloid, we actually have the particles dispersed so finely within the solution that we actually can't separate them by regular filtration.

For example, milk is actually a colloid of water with a lot of protein particles dispersed into it.

Only the particles in milk, these protein particles are much, much smaller than the dirt particles.

So let's say the dirt particles are macroscopic, so greater than one micrometer in size.
