Converging Lenses

Converging lenses, often known as convex lenses, are designed so that incoming parallel light rays are brought together (converged) at a focal point. They typically have a thicker center than edges and a positive focal length, meaning they can form real or virtual images depending on the object's position. This optical property is crucial in applications such as magnifying glasses, camera lenses, and corrective lenses for conditions like hyperopia (farsightedness).

Diverging Lenses

Diverging lenses, commonly referred to as concave lenses, have the opposite shape to converging lenses, being thinner at the center and thicker towards the edges. They cause parallel light rays to spread apart (diverge), creating a virtual focal point where the rays appear to originate. These lenses have a negative focal length and are essential in optical systems for spreading out light and correcting myopia (nearsightedness) as well as being used in certain scientific instruments.
