There are three stable oxygen isotopes, oxygen 16 17 and 18. All of them are going to have the same number of protons. They will all have eight protons. Oxygen 16 will also have eight neutrons represented by the eight black dots here within the nucleus. Then the first energy level will have two electrons. Oxygen has a total of eight electrons, so the second energy level will have six electrons. Oxygen 17 is going to be just like oxygen 16. But if you look closely, we&#x27;re gonna have one more neutron here. We&#x27;re gonna have nine neutrons. We&#x27;ll still have two electrons in the first energy level in six in the second energy level. Then for oxygen, 18 will end up with two more neutrons in the nucleus for a total of 10 neutrons, but will still have to neutrons or electrons in the first energy level and six electrons in the second energy level. So the neutrons are black and the protons air red

well, we obviously can&#x27;t draw to scale. But, um, the most common naturally occurring isotope of oxygen is oxygen 16 which has eight protons and neutrons. So we&#x27;ll put eight protons and neutrons in the nucleus, and then somewhere around the nucleus, there will be eight electrons.

Miljan has an atomic number of 10. So it&#x27;s gonna have 10 neutron or 10 protons for sure. It could have a very number of neutrons. I&#x27;ll draw one that has 10 neutrons. This is the answer to Chapter one problem Number 63 fromthe Smith Organic Chemistry textbook. And this problem gives us skeletal drawings and asks us to convert them to the letter drawings us A. Drawing all the all the carbons and hydrogen sze So this is sort of a nightmare of a problem. This is going from a less complicated representation to a much more complicated representation which not sure you would ever want to do with the problem. Asks us to do it. And so we shall so remember, um, each corner or end of line in, uh, skeletal representation, uh, is a carbon atom. And so we just replaced all the corners and all the ends of lines with carbon atoms. And remember hydrogen zehr not shown in skeletal representation. Um, but we always assume that there are basically as many hydrogen zzzz there could be. So if a carbon is only showing to bond stuff carbons, we assume that there are two hydrogen is on it as well. Yeah, Okay, so just bear with me for a moment, and I will do my best to write this in as quickly as possible again. This is probably not something you would ever want to do. It&#x27;s always best to simplify things as much as possible, and this is sort of going in the opposite direction. It&#x27;s taking something that&#x27;s much easier to look at and making something that is quite messy to look at. So that&#x27;s a s. So then, for B, we&#x27;re just gonna do the same thing. Take any ends of lines on any, um, like corners or junctions of lines. Ah, and replace them with carbons and then assume that each carbon has a CZ. Many hydrogen is on it as possible. Ah, And then after that, it appears to be just a matter of filling in hydrogen sze. So again, not thio beat a dead horse, so to speak. But I&#x27;m not sure why you would ever wants to do this. Um, it&#x27;s taking. Oops. It&#x27;s taking a way of writing molecule. That&#x27;s quite simple on making it quite a bit harder. Um, and certainly much, much less pleasant to look at. Um, So, yes, Perhaps the point of this problem is to show you how great skeletal structures are and why you would want to utilize them whenever possible. So let me just double check very quickly that all of my carbons have the correct number of hydrogen is here. Eso each carbon should have four bonds. Of course, if you see a carbon here with more or fewer than four bonds and I&#x27;m missing it assumed that I made a mistake. But I don&#x27;t see any as I&#x27;m looking at it right now. So this carbon then has two, four, six, eight electrons around it. It doesn&#x27;t have any hydrogen sze. Let&#x27;s draw on the rest of the Hydra Jin&#x27;s while there&#x27;s one coming off of this carbon in order to give that carbon awful. Arquette two four, six eight. Same with this carbon two, four, six eight and every other carbon in the rain for the same reasons. Every carbon must have a full our tent. Hey, let&#x27;s look at this next one. So this acid tone derivative. So it&#x27;s an anti on negative charge. There is a negative charge on this carbon. There must be a Kirby, and I am so I&#x27;m gonna move things just a little bit so we can draw on the rest of those virgins. But there&#x27;s a negative charge on this carbon. So currently has two four electrons if you count the an end. So it must also be bonded to two more hydrogen Sze It&#x27;s a long bronze. Okay, now let&#x27;s look at this carbon It currently is two, four, six, eight electrons around it with its bonds so it doesn&#x27;t need any more hydrogen Sze there aren&#x27;t any attached there If we look at oxygen, it currently is two four electrons from bonding meaning it also has to imply I&#x27;d long pairs two sets of long pears This carbon currently only has one bond or two electrons Meaning it needs three more hydrogen Sze in orderto have April Architect Yeah let&#x27;s move up here now have a carbo cat eye on meaning that this carbon is missing in electron So we don&#x27;t have any extra loan pairs toe add Let&#x27;s just start adding hydrogen Sze This carbon only has one bond meaning it needs three more hydrogen sze tohave April our attempt This carbon currently is two four six electrons It needs one more hydrogen. This one is two four six electrons meeting in these one more hydrogen Now I&#x27;m gonna move over our positive charge just a little bit so you can draw extra hydrogen is here hands This carbon currently has two electrons. Right, but we still have at least two more to get up to six. The reason I&#x27;m only drawing two more hydrogen is attached here is because this carpet has a formal positive charge. The only way to give it a formal positive charge is to draw it like this. So if they&#x27;re to calculators for much hard right now, but every bond and half give one electron to carbon, you have one, two, three electrons. Carbon comes in with former surveillance electrons, and so it&#x27;s currently has a formal plus one charge. So in order to give it a plus one charges on Lee has to hydra Jin&#x27;s attached to it. There&#x27;s one hydrogen tash there. This carbon only shows one bond, meaning it needs three more toe hydrogen in orderto have a full architect. This carbon currently is two four. Six. Electrons needs two more through bond with hydrogen. This one has two four six electrons, meaning there&#x27;s also a hydrogen here to give it a full arquette two four six eight coming down here for the same reason as the buck, too. It needs one hydrogen to get a full arc, Ted, and same with this one, it&#x27;s notas two four six eight electrons.
