00:03 Today we're going to solve problem four from chapter 20, which discusses ralls ' theory of the original position and the veiled ignorance.

00:12 So to start off, ralls is a philosopher from the school of liberalism, and he develops these ideas of original position and the veil of ignorance.

00:24 So basically, his line of thinking started with the question of how.

00:32 We could objectively determine what a just society would look like.

00:37 And he realized that everyone's person, everyone's view of a just society would be based off of each person's circumstances.

00:45 So a rich person might have a very different view of a just society than a poor person would and different levels of education might inform how people think of justice and there's just many different factors that would change people's views of a just society.

01:01 So to get rid of all the subjectivity, rawls proposed an imaginative before -life meeting.

01:12 He basically imagines that everyone in a society gets together before they're all born, and they come up, they sit down together, and they come up with laws to govern that society.

01:23 And he calls this the original position behind the bailed ignorance.

01:27 Basically, everyone starts off in the same position.

01:30 No one knows what their actual circumstances will be in this life.

01:35 And so everyone is behind this veil of ignorance and everyone is objective.
