Answered step-by-step

Problem 12 Easy Difficulty

Every year the U.S. Census Bureau counts the number of people living in poverty. The bureau uses money income thresholds as its definition of poverty, so noncash benefits such as Medicaid and food stamps do not count toward poverty thresholds. For example, in 2002 the poverty threshold for a family of three was $\$ 14,348 .$ The bar chart represents the number of people living in poverty in the United States in $2003,$ by ethnicity, based on March 2004 estimates.

in this exercise were given a budget that represents the number of people living in poverty In the United States, the year 2003. And it gives us the ethnicities by ethnicity, where we have white, black, hispanic and others. So in the first part of the question, We're supposed to find out how many whites were living in poverty in the year 2003. So we need to go and look for the bar that represents the whites that are living in poverty and in this case, the height of that bar, he is 22 1000 100 96. So we have a total of 22,186 whites uh living in poverty in part B we're supposed to find out of the impoverished, what percent were hispanic? No. First, we would need to add the total from the bar chat. That is 22,000 196 whites plus 11,390 duck class 12114 Hispanic And 3551 from other groups. So the total for that equals 49,000 251. So now we want to determine the percentage of hispanic. So this is what we're supposed to check for. So you can rock it up. one, Divided by 49,251. And then you multiply that by 100%. So that gives us 24 .6%. So of the impoverished 24.6% are Hispanic in Patsy. The problem, we're supposed to find out how the graph might be misleading. Now when you look at the levels for the vertical axis there, the label is frequency in brackets in thousands. And the first bar for the whites has a height of 2196. Now, the label Right next to that is 20,000 for the fast buck, Uh for the, you know, just below uh just below the highest spot. And then the next is 25,000. Now you notice by saying the frequency is in thousands. We ought to have Instead of 20,000, we should have 20, And instead of 25,000 we should have 25. So it's a misleading because the person may think that we're talking about 25 Thousand,000, that's about 25 million. And and that is misleading if you follow The instruction of frequency in 1000. So this really would mean 25 million When it's supposed to mean 25,000.
