Explain how the mercury level in a barometer changes when a high-pressure system moves into a region.
Now, when a high-pressure system moves into a region, the air pressure increases. When the air pressure on the open end of the barometer increases, it pushes on the mercury harder than it did before. Mercury is pushed higher into the closed end of the barometer until the downward pressure caused by the weight of the column of mercury is equal to the atmospheric pressure.

question Number seven asks us to describe the functionality of a barometer and why the level of the mercury in the barometer is going to change when we have a high pressure system that moves in. So here we have a barometer has mercury open to the atmosphere so that it can feel the pressure. The external pressure appear. We have a vacuum. So as we increase the external pressure, then that is going to push mawr on the Mercury. The mercury has nowhere to go but up inside of the barometer. And so as Ah, high pressure system moves in and pushes down with greater force, we're going to see a rise in the mercury so that this pressure, the pressure associated with the height of the mercury in the column, equals atmospheric pressure. Or we could say P mercury, due to its height, equals P atmosphere.
