Amphiphilic Molecules

Soap molecules possess both hydrophilic (water-loving) and hydrophobic (oil-loving) regions, which enables them to interact effectively with both water and oils or grease. This dual nature is what allows soap to bridge the gap between water and non-polar substances, facilitating the cleansing process.

Micelle Formation

When soap is added to water, its molecules spontaneously arrange themselves into spherical structures known as micelles. In a micelle, the hydrophobic tails aggregate inward to sequester oil and grease, while the hydrophilic heads face outward toward the water, allowing the encapsulated dirt to be washed away.

Emulsification

Emulsification is the process by which soap breaks down large oil and grease deposits into smaller droplets that can be dispersed in water. By stabilizing these smaller droplets, soap prevents them from reuniting, making it easier for water to remove and rinse away oils and dirt.
