Question
Formaldehyde, $\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{C}=\mathrm{O}$, is known to all biologists because of its usefulness as a tissue preservative. When pure, formaldehyde trimerizes to give trioxane, $\mathrm{C}_{3} \mathrm{H}_{6} \mathrm{O}_{3}$, which, surprisingly enough, has no carbonyl groups. Only one monobromo derivative $\left(\mathrm{C}_{3} \mathrm{H}_{5} \mathrm{BrO}_{3}\right)$ of trioxane is possible. Propose a structure for trioxane.
Step 1
Trioxane has a molecular formula of C3H6O3, which means it contains 3 carbon atoms, 6 hydrogen atoms, and 3 oxygen atoms. Show more…

Compound $\mathbf{X}$ is 2 -propanol. When compound $\mathbf{X}$ is heated with strong acid, it dehydrates to form compound $\mathbf{Y}\left(\mathrm{C}_{3} \mathrm{H}_{6}\right) .$ When compound $\mathbf{X}$ is oxidized, compound $\mathbf{Z}\left(\mathrm{C}_{3} \mathrm{H}_{6} \mathrm{O}\right)$ forms, which cannot be oxidized further. Draw the condensed structural formulas and give the IUPAC names for compounds $\mathbf{X}, \mathbf{Y},$ and $\mathbf{Z}$ (12.3,12.4)
