Why is that the case? well, it's the case because every time i go to the right by one unit, i am multiplying by the same value.

Notice, as i go to the right, one unit from zero to one, what's happening? i'm multiplying by 3.

Then, as i go to the right 1 unit, from x equals 1 to 2, what's happening to my y value? well, again, i'm multiplying by 3, right? first i went from 1 to 3 with the ys, then i went from 3 to 9 with the ys.
