Answered step-by-step

Problem 39 Easy Difficulty

Global positioning satellites (GPS) can be used to determine positions with great accuracy. If one of the satellites is at a distance of $20,000 \mathrm{km}$ from you, what percent uncertainty in the distance does a 2 -m uncertainty represent? How many significant figures are nceded in the distance?

Math Review - Intro

In mathematics, a proof is a sequence of statements given to explain how a conclusion is derived from premises known or assumed to be true. The proof attempts to demonstrate that the conclusion is a logical consequence of the premises, and is one of the most important goals of mathematics.

Algebra - Overview

In mathematics, algebra is one of the broad parts of mathematics, together with number theory, geometry and analysis. In its most general form, algebra is the study of mathematical symbols and the rules for manipulating these symbols; it is a unifying thread of almost all of mathematics.

so basically a GPS allows a satellite 20,000 kilometers away from you to pinpoint you within a uncertainty of two meters. So essentially the percent uncertainty would be equal to two meters divided by 20,000 kilometers or we can say two times 10 to the seventh meters and then multiply this by 100%. So the percent uncertainty of a GPS system would be one times 10 to the negative fifth percent. Um, we can say that ah, the distance 20,000,000 meters needs to be obviously distinguishable from 20,000,000 and two meters, which means that here, in order to measure eight significant fig years are needed and distance measurements, That is the end of the solution. Thank you for watching.
