Entropy and Spontaneity

Entropy, a measure of disorder, is another crucial factor for spontaneity. Even if a process is endothermic (absorbs heat), an accompanying increase in system disorder can make the process spontaneous. In solution formation, the dispersal of solute particles into the solvent increases the overall randomness, which can drive the process forward despite a positive enthalpy change.

Intermolecular Forces

Intermolecular forces are the attractions between molecules, such as hydrogen bonds, dipole–dipole interactions, and dispersion forces. In the context of solution formation, the strength and nature of these forces between solute and solvent determine the energy change during the process. Strong interactions can release significant energy (exothermic), while weaker interactions may not fully compensate for the energy needed to disrupt the original structure (endothermic).

Endothermic Processes

Endothermic processes absorb heat because the energy required to break the initial interactions among solute or solvent molecules is greater than the energy released upon forming the new interactions during the solution formation. In this case, the process has a positive enthalpy change, and thermal energy from the surroundings is absorbed to make up the difference, even if the overall process is spontaneous.

Exothermic Processes

Exothermic processes release heat because the formation of solute–solvent interactions releases more energy than is required to break the original solute–solute or solvent–solvent bonds. At the molecular level, when new, stronger attractive forces are established between the solute and solvent molecules, the excess energy is given off as heat, which is a signature of a negative enthalpy change in the process.

Enthalpy Change

Enthalpy change (?H) represents the net energy exchange in a process. For solution formation, it is the difference between the energy required to disrupt existing interactions (such as solvent–solvent and solute–solute forces) and the energy released from new solute–solvent interactions. Understanding this balance helps explain whether heat is absorbed or released in the process.
