All right, so if we wanted to relate the structure of a cell membrane to its function, i think the place to start here is to look at the bilayer itself.

So what we have with our bilayer is a couple of these phospholipids, right? and each phospholipid is composed of hydrophilic head.

So hydrophilic, meaning it likes to interact with water.

And then a hydrophobic tail, or two tails actually.

These are hydrocarbons, fatty acids.

And so basically our hydrophilic heads tend to interact with water on either side.

And so the hydrophilic heads interact without water, keeping it from reaching these hydrophobic tails that are on the inside.

It'll let small non -polar molecules through, but larger polar molecules are kept out and need to be transferred through some protein.
