All right, so we have a couple of questions in regards to how to compare bond strength and the potential energies in certain substances as they react.
00:13
So i went ahead and set up two reaction diagrams.
00:16
I have one on the left that shows an exothermic reaction.
00:21
I put exo underneath.
00:23
Reactants start out on the left with products on the right in this diagram.
00:28
And we see that the reactants have higher potential energies, and they end up having a lower potential energy in the product state.
00:36
Now, on the right, we have an endothermic reaction.
00:39
That's why i have endo on the bottom.
00:42
And you'll notice that reactants start out at lower potential energies, and as the reaction progresses, we end up with a higher potential energy with the products.
00:52
So we discussed energy and stability and so on in an earlier problem in this unit.
01:02
Keep in mind that potential energies in the bonds and the chemical bonds and these substances, when they are higher, you have less stability, and the bonds are weaker.
01:20
And when you get to a lower potential energy, we'll just look at the exothermic reaction on the left as an example, you get down to a lower potential energy, you have higher bond strength and more stability...
