Coordination Isomerism

This concept covers the various ways in which a coordination compound can have its ligands arranged about the metal center. In octahedral complexes, ligands that are chemically different or have different denticities can occupy different positions leading to geometrical isomers (like cis and trans) as well as to optical isomers if the arrangement lacks certain symmetry elements.

Octahedral Geometry

In coordination chemistry, many complexes exhibit an octahedral structure where six sites are available to bind ligands. The octahedral geometry is rich in isomerism because the positions of the ligands can vary (adjacent or opposite), greatly affecting the overall shape and properties of the complex.

Bidentate Chelation

Bidentate ligands (such as ethylenediamine) bind through two donor atoms, forming a ring with the central metal ion. This chelation restricts the possible orientations of the ligand and influences the arrangement of other monodentate ligands, thereby playing a key role in the number and type of isomers that can be formed.
