Question
Identify the four types of tissue in the body, and describe the major functions of each tissue.
Step 1
This tissue acts as coverings and controls the movement of materials across the surface. It forms the outer layer of the skin and the inner lining of most internal cavities such as the mouth, nose, lungs, and stomach. In simple terms, epithelial tissue helps in Show more…

The body has four basic types of tissues: epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue, and nervous tissue. Each type of tissue has a specific role in the body. Epithelial tissue covers the surfaces of the body, both inside and outside. It forms the outer layer of the skin and lines the organs and cavities within the body. Epithelial tissue protects the underlying structures, regulates the exchange of materials, and secretes substances. Connective tissue provides support and structure to the body. It includes various types of tissue such as bone, cartilage, adipose tissue, and blood. Connective tissue connects and anchors different body parts, provides cushioning and protection, and transports nutrients and waste products. Muscle tissue is responsible for movement in the body. There are three types of muscle tissue: skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and smooth muscle. Skeletal muscle is attached to bones and allows voluntary movements. Cardiac muscle is found in the heart and is responsible for pumping blood. Smooth muscle is found in the walls of organs and blood vessels and controls involuntary movements. Nervous tissue is involved in communication and coordination within the body. It consists of neurons and supporting cells. Nervous tissue receives and transmits signals, allowing the body to respond to stimuli and coordinate various functions.
