So this question says we have a chemical system, so this will be our system and we have energy e flowing out of the system and asks, What's the sign off the energy in this system? And so in this case, if we have energy flowing out of the system, our East system will be less than zero, meaning it's negative. And so the sign will be negative. And the reason for this is that our system is losing energy and it's being gained by the surroundings, and so are east System is less than zero.
