Question
If the transposable element Ds of maize transposed by the same mechanism as $\mathrm{Tn} 3$, would we see the speckled kernels with the same high frequency? Why, or why not?
Step 1
Transposable elements like Ds in maize and Tn3 in bacteria transpose through a "cut and paste" mechanism, where the element is excised from one location in the genome and inserted into another. Show more…

Describe the structure of the $A c$ transposon in maize. In what ways do the $D s$ transposons differ structurally and functionally from the $A c$ transposon?
Activator (Ac) and Dissociator (Ds) are mobile genetic elements that were first discovered in maize by Barbara McClintock and later identified as DNA transposons. Ac elements can transpose by themselves from one site to another within the genome. Ds elements can also move in the genome, but only if an Ac element is also present in the same cell. From this observation, it is most likely that both Ac and Ds elements encode a transposase protein, but only Ac has inverted terminal repeats. Ac encodes a transposase protein but lacks inverted repeats, while Ds has inverted repeats but no transposase. Both Ac and Ds elements have inverted terminal repeats, but only Ac encodes a transposase protein.
In addition to $T c 1$, the $C$. elegans genome contains other families of DNA transposons such as $T c 2, T c 3, T c 4,$ and Tc5. Like $T c 1$, their transposition is repressed in the germ line but not in somatic cells. Predict the behavior of these elements in the mutant strains where $T c 1$ is no longer repressed due to mutations in the RNAi pathway. Justify your answer.
