Vasopressin

Vasopressin, also known as the antidiuretic hormone (ADH), is a hormone produced by the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary gland. Its primary function is to regulate water balance in the body by promoting water reabsorption in the kidneys, which helps maintain proper blood osmolality and blood pressure.

Diabetes Insipidus

Diabetes insipidus is a condition that results from the deficiency or ineffective action of vasopressin. Without adequate vasopressin, the kidneys are unable to concentrate urine, leading to the production of large volumes of dilute urine and, consequently, an intense, persistent thirst to compensate for water loss.

Water Homeostasis

Water homeostasis is the process by which the body maintains the proper balance of water and electrolytes. This balance is critical for normal cellular function and overall health, and it is managed largely through hormonal regulation, particularly by vasopressin, which adjusts water reabsorption based on the body’s hydration status.
