Problem 8 Easy Difficulty

(II) A $0.140-\mathrm{kg}$ baseball traveling 35.0 $\mathrm{m} / \mathrm{s}$ strikes the catcher's
mitt, which, in bringing the ball to rest, recoils backward 11.0 $\mathrm{cm}$ .
What was the average force applied by the ball on the glove?

Answer

$$-7.80 \times 10^{2} \mathrm{N}$$

applied to the baseball by the glove. And so we can say that the average acceleration of the baseball would be equal to the philosophy. Final squared minus Steve Philosophy Initial squared, divided by two times the displacement in the ex direction. And so this is just based on to Deacon O Matics. So this is going to be equal to negative 30 rather negative open parentheses, 35.0 meters per second quantity squared. Given that the final philosophy is going to be zero and then this would be divided by two times 20.110 meters. And so this is going to give us negative 5568 meters per second squared. Um, we can say that the force average is going to be equal to the massive baseball times, the acceleration average, and so this is gonna be equal to the massive baseball 0.140 kilograms multiplied by again negative 5568 meters per second squared. And so we find that the average force is going to be equal to negative 780 mutants. This is a negative force because it is acting in the opposite direction of the initial velocity, which reconsidered to be positive. So again, this is negative because it's acting in the opposite direction off that initial velocity of the baseball. That is the end of the solution. Thank you for watching.
