So let's talk about the basic relevance of telomeres in cancer.

Now, your cells contain dna, and this dna is normally wrapped in the form of chromosomes.

Now, at the ends of these chromosomes, you have these caps, these caps.

They're called telomeres.

And these telomeres are protective.

They are non -coding dna, so they will not code for proteins.

However, your cells have a gene that codes for a protein called telomerase.

And what telomerase does is it can extend these telomeres.

However, most cells in your body do not have telomerase, and your normal cell machinery for dna replication does not extend telomeres.

And so you can imagine, after many successive divisions of one particular cell, that you could produce a chromosome that has very, very short telomeres...
