The question we have is about a food chain.
00:04
And i'm just going to draw out a little diagram to represent that food chain.
00:09
I'm just using simple words here to represent the different levels of the food chain.
00:18
And then we'll go through and kind of connect them with how we would expect them to flow in the real world.
00:26
So you've got energy that's coming from the sun.
00:29
That the grass is using for photosynthesis to make its food carbohydrates and things like that, then that grass is being eaten by a bug, and that bug is going to be eaten by a mouse, and that mouse is going to be eaten by an owl.
00:48
And what we're trying to figure out is which of these levels of the food chain has the most biomass, which is just the most amount of living material.
01:03
We know that the energy coming from the sun is going to be used by the grass to make food for itself, and that is what we're going to call 100 % of the energy that's coming into our system, because the grass has to convert that energy to something consumable, something that can be eaten, before any other level of this can take some of that energy.
01:33
And it turns out with each level of the food chain, there is some of that energy lost to heat and metabolism, digestion, things like that.
01:45
And that amount tends to be around 10 % per level...
