Genetic Linkage and Map Distance

Genetic linkage refers to the tendency of genes located physically close on a chromosome to be inherited together, whereas map distance is a measure of how far apart two genes are on a chromosome. When the genes are separated by a large distance, say halfway around a circular chromosome, the probability of both genes being present in the same DNA fragment is extremely low due to high recombination frequency between them.

Recombination in Circular Chromosomes

Many bacterial chromosomes are circular, meaning that genes located diametrically opposite each other are physically very far apart. In such arrangements, any DNA fragment taken up during transformation is unlikely to span the entire distance needed to capture both genes simultaneously, resulting in them not being cotransformed.

Bacterial Transformation

Bacterial transformation is the process by which bacteria take up exogenous DNA fragments from their environment and incorporate them into their own genome. This process often results in the transfer of linked genes as part of a single DNA fragment, but it is limited by the size of the DNA fragment that can be taken up and recombined into the genome.
