Secondary Growth

Secondary growth refers to the process by which plants increase in thickness or girth, mainly through the activity of lateral meristems such as the vascular and cork cambium. This growth is essential for the development of woody tissues and the formation of protective outer layers in mature plants.

Cork Cambium

The cork cambium, another type of lateral meristem, contributes to secondary growth by producing the periderm, which replaces the epidermis in older stems and roots. The periderm, composed of cork cells, provides protective tissue and insulation as the plant thickens.

Apical Meristem

Apical meristems are regions of undifferentiated cells located at the tips of roots and shoots, responsible for primary growth. They contribute to the elongation of the plant by producing new tissues, but are not involved in increasing the girth or thickness of older stems and roots.

Vascular Cambium
