we're being asked to describe what a function is in our own words. While ah, function is a special type of relation where every X value is assigned to only one y value. So essentially, what I would say is a function is a special relation where each X value is paired with only one. Why value? I've also told students in the past, Essentially, it's a relation where your ex values don't repeat, so you might also say it's a relation where no X values repeat.
