For this question, we are to look at obesity and determine some conclusions regarding obesity and diets.
00:09
So our first question is what are the advantages and disadvantages of a low carb diet where we substitute protein and fat for our carbs? so advantages would be that we are getting less carbs.
00:29
And this means that we carbohydrates are really i guess efficient we could say stores of calories so if we have a lot of carbohydrates if we're not burning that energy we will be storing a lot of calories so less carbs equals less calories right but then you have to remember if we are eating a lot of protein and fat we will be getting calories from that as well.
01:02
However, if you think about carbohydrates, you can probably eat more carbohydrates than you would protein and fat.
01:10
So the trade -off would be maybe a net decrease in our caloric intake.
01:18
But remember, it's not just always about the calories.
01:21
The disadvantage would be, it would be that we are substituting protein and fat for carbohydrates and if we just have a diet composed of protein and fat it's not well balanced and our source of calories isn't as widespread because remember carbohydrates include anything ranging from spinach to potatoes to pasta so there's a whole wide range of carbohydrates but when we think about proteins we are usually getting that protein from meat or fish we can be getting protein from eggs and then finally the smallest percentage of that protein is coming from plant sources.
02:11
So remember, if we're eating a lot of fat, that is going to be quite bad for our vascular system.
02:22
We can have an increase in cholesterol.
02:25
And usually with these proteins and fats, we see that when we cook them, we include a lot of sodium.
02:32
So that would also lead to an increase in sodium.
02:36
So basically we'll just be able to say that proteins in fat lead to secondary problems.
02:54
So we would say unbalanced diet, increase in cholesterol, increase in sodium.
03:08
Right? now we will go on and look at should the government regulate claims of diet books? so in terms of governmental regulation, people will have their own opinions of it.
03:24
Let's just say like, for example, the libertarian perspective would be to say no, government regulation, then also no government regulation in other spheres where we would see government regulation come into place, such as like minimum wage.
03:38
This all depends on once again your political background and what you would believe in.
03:44
But the totalitarian government would say, well, we're going to, to regulate our diets, but we're also going to regulate everything else about the government.
03:53
So it all depends on, once again, your political background and your perspective and the views that you have...
